Optimal Development for Movement and Repair: Babies

Many people in mainstream, western cultures believe that human babies are born helpless - that they need us to meet their every need, to mold them into the kind of people we want them to be. Yet, once we become parents, we realize that babies come to us already who they are, more likely to mold us into the kind of people they want us to be than the other way around. But even more than coming to us with their own spirit and personality, babies come to us with their own story – the story of their life in utero and the story of their birth.

All babies are unique. Some are easy-going and gentle curious and open to the world around them. Others are intense and easily unsettled. When our babies display behavior that we don’t understand, we often go to doctors and books for answers, but according to massage and craniosacral therapist, Kate White, our babies can tell us their own stories and if we listen, we can help to comfort and heal them – through play, movement and touch.

In the following conversation with Rebecca Thompson Hitt, MFT and Kate White, RCST, they talk about the importance of moment, and rest, for mothers and babies. They touch on the steps of the birth sequence and how understanding these along with your baby’s, and your own, story, can help you understand challenges you might be facing today. They discuss how to understand your baby’s story through their non-verbal communication and how to help meet their needs. They discuss the importance of tummy time and massage for early neurological development.
